A thriving ecosystem is a hallmark of a growing and vibrant ecosystem. Not only capacity-building but also incubator programs are important drivers for the growth of start-ups in Rwanda. This article explores the role being played by the DigiCenter to enhance Rwanda’s tech/incubator ecosystem.

The Digital Transformation Center is a Rwandan-German initiative aimed at developing impact-driven digital solutions in Africa. This is done through our innovation studio where we develop SDG aligned, impact-driven digital solutions. These solutions make services accessible for everyone and improve the lives of vulnerable groups. In addition, the DigiCenter focuses on capacity building, culture change and equipping our tech community with digital and management skills.

Hubs and Incubators in Rwanda

Hubs and incubators play a significant role in the entrepreneur’s journey. This means that the growth of the Rwandan entrepreneurship ecosystem requires them to continuously improve their programs and the quality of support provided to entrepreneurs. To make this feasible, initiatives like GIZ’s Make-IT project offer capacity building trainings for hubs and incubators. There are about 20 hubs/incubators concentrated within the Kigali ecosystem; more than half of which launched operations within the last five years. This is a hallmark of a growing and vibrant ecosystem.

The key players in the ecosystem include Impact Hub, FabLab, kLab, 250StartUps, Westerwelle Startup Haus, Social Impact Incubator among many others. These hubs and incubators bring together dynamic entrepreneurs and start-ups that are making a difference in Rwanda’s ecosystem.

DigiCenter – Creating linkages between the government, the private sector and civil society

The Digicenter fits into the ecosystem by creating linkages between the government, private sector and civil society in the following ways:

Partnerships

created with the different hubs and incubators to empower their respective members. This is done through trainings, workshops and various events.

Capacity-building

of ministries and other government institutions like RISA through support in developing ICT strategies and policies as well as optimizing their business processes. For this purpose, we organize study tours, facilitate trainings and conduct studies with government officials.

Modern Spaces

to boost creativity and collaboration. The DigiCenter consists of the following spaces: Developer space, VR/AR lab, Industry 4.0 Transfer lab, Knowledge transfer lab and an event space.

Up until now, the DigiCenter has been able to train over 500 people, develop 17 digital solutions and host over 80 events with a total of more than 4000 participants present.

Empowering our Tech Community

One of the ways we empower our community is through teams spotlight events. In these meetups, teams that we supported and worked with share about their entrepreneurial journey and their projects.

In an effort to move our ecosystem forward, a newsletter is shared bi-monthly with various stakeholders addressing achievements and opportunities within the ecosystem. To be part of this mailing list, please feel free to contact us. We look forward to even more collaborations and capacity building.
